Since summer began I have been receiving e-mails from some of my readers asking me about a Coconut Limeade that they had in Cartagena and loved. Okay guys, after some phone calls to Colombia, I have the recipe for you.

Aguapanela or Agua de Panela tanslates to “panela water” and is a traditional and popular Colombian drink. It can be served hot or cold. Aguapanela is used as a base for coffee, hot chocolate and mixed with lime juice as medicine for the flu
Cold Aguapanela with lime juice is great for hot summer days.
Panela is a product that is made with sugarcane, it is sweet and brown, is sold in blocks or grated and the flavor is similar to that of brown sugar. Panela is also popular in other countries and is known by many different names. In Central America it is known as papelón, in Mexico as piloncillo, and in Ecuador, Perú and Bolivia as chancaca.

Mazamorra is a traditional Colombian drink from the Andean zone of the country and very popular as a side dish to foods such as our wonderful bandeja paisa. It is typically accompanied with panela or guava paste.
What is Mazamorra? It is simply corn cooked until it is very soft.
Mazamorra is known as a drink, but to me it is more like a dessert and the “claro”, the cooking liquid from the mazamorra, is what my grandmother called “sobremesa”, or the drink after the meal.
