    Erica Dinho Headshot

Hola and Welcome to My Colombian Recipes. I hope you enjoy your visit!

My name is Erica and I was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia. I moved to the United States in 2000. I live in Connecticut with my husband and our two boys. I am not a professional chef however. My educational background is in Tourism and Hotel Management and Marketing. Although Spanish is my first language, this site is written in English, so please excuse any grammatical errors…I do my best.

I published my first cookbook “I Cook Latin Food: The Best Recipes from 5 Popular Hispanic Cooking Blogs (Spanish Edition)” in 2021 with Penguin Random House.

Growing up in Colombia, cooking was always important in our family. We gathered at mamita’s house every weekend where she cooked traditional Colombian dishes that have remained family favorites years later.

For more facts about me click here.

    About the blog

This blog was created in February 2009 and was inspired by my maternal grandmother, who was a very important person in my life and an amazing traditional Colombian cook. I never saw Mamita cooking from a recipe. She made dinner from whatever ingredients she found in the kitchen. My hope is that people from other countries discover Colombian food and learn more about our culture and traditions. Cooking traditional Colombian food connects me to my culture and allows me to share my heritage with my American family.

My recipes are not limited to traditional Colombian food. I have many other recipes for dishes representing other countries that I enjoy cooking for my family and friends, which I will also share with you. The sources of most of my recipes are my family, friends and my own creations and experiments, but if I cook a dish from a magazine, cookbook or TV show, I will list the source. All of the pictures and writing are done by me. The webmaster of My Colombian Recipes is my husband, who doesn’t get a lot credit, but he handles all the technical stuff for the site.

Hello, Erica. Many-many years ago we visited a friend who had spent a year in the mountains in South America (not certain as to which country). She came back with a recipe she called "Crackling Rice". It was delicious! As I recall, she fried the uncooked rice in a pan with oil until the rice all cracked and turned translucent, then she added cut up chicken and chicken broth and seasonings and baked the dish.

We were told that this was a very common dish, and it was delicious!

Do you have any recipe that matches my description? I have searched for several years and have not found anything like it.

      Thanks for you exciting recipes!

      Bob

Hi, Erica. I am a Puerto Rican Jew, and grew up eating such dinners as: arroz con pollo with a side serving of pickled herring and onions...homemade beef tamales with rugelach for dessert...mofongo followed up with cheese kugel...etc. I enjoy various cuisines including but not limited to Yiddish, Jewish, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran, Colombian, Peruvian, Korean, Indian, Nigerian, Japanese nd other wonderful styles of food and cooking. I particularly LOVE the delicious recipes on your website. Please leave more recipes!

      Hi Erica,
Thank you for publishing your recipes! I'm half Colombian, born and raised in America, and I was never taught my culture or how to cook Colombian food. Now as an adult I'm doing my own research and want learn to cook it and I'm so glad I found this website!
      Keep it up!

I am so glad I saw these recipes. I am an American but have always practiced cooking with my sister in laws. I have had to guess at ingredients and measurements.
Please publish a Colombian Cookbook. These recipes are so hard to find in print and put together.
      You did a great job!

Your recipes have been such a God sent for my family. We adopted our 13 year daughter from Colombia last year. Before she came I began experimenting with recipes so I could make her comfort foods. Not only has she loved the food I make for her, but my whole family has fallen in love with Colombian food. Do you have cookbook that is a collection of your Colombia recipes? If so, I would LOVE to buy a copy.

      Hi Erica,
I'm originally from Bogotá, Colombia. I came to the United States when I was 7 years old, and enjoyed my mother's Colombian cooking for years. She was also a chef. Unfortunately, when my mother passed away last year, her unwritten Colombian recipes went with her. Although she didn't cook much towards the end, I was able to continue enjoying Colombian recipes thanks to you. I get excited every time I receive an email from the website of your recent post. Now that I retired as a chef, I'm able to cook more of your recipes. Thank you so much for keeping Colombian recipes coming since they are enjoyed by my entire family.

Iam born in NY,USA but my parents are both from Bogota,Colombian . When am asked what am I, I always respond COLOMBIAN! I am the oldest girl in my family so I learned to make all of the traditional meals of Colombia . I finally started writing down all my recipes so my daughter (12 y.o.) and son (14 y.o.)would also learn our traditional foods. However, my recipes are the old fashion method of a little of this and a little of that. this website provides all the measurements that a beginner cook needs. Thank you for this website!

      Hola Erica

My husband and I are hosting 4 young brothers from Colombia for Christmas with the hopes of adopting them next year. My 13 y/o daughter (who loves to cook) mentioned that we should learn how to cook some traditional dishes to welcome them to our home and I am so glad that I found your website. We are both anxious to get started in the kitchen together and hope we make a great first impression on these boys.
