Brevas con Arequipe are a popular dessert in Colombia and a favorite in my family. My grandmother and mom made these as far back as I can remember. Mamita used to make pounds of Brevas con Arequipe and keep them in glass containers and give them to her kids to take home.
This will be a great treat to give for Valentine's Day. In Colombia you'll find Brevas con Arequipe at the supermarkets and we usually serve them with fresh cheese on the side. I absolutely love this simple and delicious traditional Colombian dessert!
Buen provecho!

My neighbor just gave me a basket filled with big and green figs. I like to make brevas con arequipe pero no sé si las brevas se cocinan?
Recuerdo bien comerlas de chico de cualquier pastelería en Bogotá.

Erica, as a kid living in Bogota I was literally weaned off of Brevas con ariquipe!!! How about those bocadillos velenos, mantecadas, el mazato, etc. What delicious "goodies" we enjoyed growing up in Colombia!!

Help Erica, I have a fig tree with about three dozen brevas, I want to make dulce de brevas but need to know this, Do I use green brevas or ripe ones? Your picture shows ripe ones, bu I remember them been green. My brevas are maturing slowly, about one every two days.

I didn't find green figs, so I used ripe. You can use both.

I remember "brevas con arequipe" from my childhood very well. I think it's about time I had them again! What I remember most about "brevas," however, is the fig tree we used to have in our backyard. I was a latchkey kid, and sometimes I would forget my key. I would spend the afternoon eating figs straight off the tree until my mom got home.
