This arepa con chorizo y hogao is a popular dish in Colombia. This simple meal can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For as long as I can remember, this meal has been my absolute favorite. The one dish that I am loyal to above all else... Arepa con Chorizo y Hogao. When I was a kid, I would request it whenever my mom asked me what I wanted for dinner.
It is a simple dish, but I can eat it every day! Super easy to make, flavorful, tasty and fun.

Ingredients You'll Need
The printable recipe card with exact amounts and cooking directions is below.
Arepas: You can buy them at your local latin markets or make them at home. Check this list for some homemade arepas recipes.
Chorizo: I like to use Colombian chorizos, you can find them at Latin markets.
Hogao: This Colombian creole sauce is made with tomatoes, onions and oil. You can find my hogao recipe here.
Fresh Cilantro: To garnish the arepa, you can replace it with parsley if you prefer.
Salt and Pepper: This is optional add to your taste if you need it.

How to Make this Dish
- To assemble: Place the cooked arepas on a platter and top them with the hogao.
- Add the chorizo slices on top of the hogao sauce.
- Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add fresh cilantro on top and serve warm.

I was brough up on arepa and I can't remember it not being on my mom's menu every day. We ate it for breakfast, sometimes lunch or dinner with different toppings. I know I am biased as Antioquia is my home region, but arepas are a delicious, versatile and comforting dish that you can make easily at home.
There are many variations of arepas in Colombia and like many traditional dishes every region has its own variation.
