Sancocho is a comforting, hearty and filling soup popular in Colombia and other South American countries.

Sancochos were served every weekend in my house when I was growing up…and I hated eating soup!
Colombia is a country that is big on soups, at least that’s how it was in my house. After many battles with my mom, I fell in love with soups and here I am sharing these delicious Colombian sancochos recipes with you. I think my parents would be very proud of me for eating my soup 🙂
This dish is also popular during the holidays especially on December 25th and January 1st. You can see people making sancocho over open flame in the streets, next to the rivers or in their kitchens. I love serving this soup with avocado and white rice on the side.
What is Sancocho Made of?
Sancochos are made with a combinations of protein, potatoes, yuca, plantain, corn, onions, peppers, other vegetables, herbs and spices. like many traditional recipes every cook and country has its own version. In Colombia we have different sancochos depending on the region.
Here is a list with some of my favorite sancocho recipes. If you don't find your favorite on this list check all my soups recipes.

Hi Erica. You are so welcome. It was such a honor. I love soups. I would love to try some of the soups that you grew up with and be more familiar with Columbian flavors. It's actually an ingredient. I used to hate cilantro before but now, I love them so much. Welcome back.

All the soups look fantastic, and I enjoyed the guest bloggers! My sister who lives with a south american man complains he makes soup like SANCOCHO DE GALLINA, and I laugh, because I love it, very rustic like our mother used to make.
I still love all things from my childhood, but just revisited mac n cheese, she baked it and I do not care for that version, and also I love carrots now, but would gag and make a big scene to keep from eating them as a child 🙂

I love soups - and I can never get enough! I hated lima beans as a kid - but I love them now! Funny how tastes change, isn't it?

I'm not much of a soup girl. I can appreciate that they taste great, but for some reason, I just prefer solid food. 😉 There are several foods I used to hate, but now love, most notably coconut! Yes, I used to hate coconut. What on earth was wrong with me??

Thank you guys for the comments!

I LOVE SOUP! If my husband would let me, I'd be cooking soup every night! I great up in Korea and we used to eat soup everyday, too, for almost every meal. I hated it too but now that I'm away from Korea, I miss it a lot! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your soup recipes!

It's the same with me about soups! My mom used to serve them for the first course almost everyday (as is tradition in Ukraine) and I didn't eating them too much. Now I love soups, although I have to say I make all different kinds of soups other than the ukrainian/russian ones 🙂

When I was a kid, I was in a borading school and we were served vegetables (stir-fry) everyday; I always wasted it but now I can give anything to get those fresh vegetables delivered here ( as i am far away from my home(India)), and I love all vegetables now! I regret so much for not eating them those days 🙂

Oh yes - I LOVE soups! Today, the weather finally turned very wintry and it's become quite cold. But it's perfect for soups and I love what you've offered here. I'll have to come back soon and catch up on all the recent posts I've missed, especially the marvelous guest bloggers you've featured!

Loved the post and the pics though I am not a fan of soups. Once in a blue moon while dining out, sure thing, I'd love to but not everyday or every week. In India, soups have just caught on as a concept relating to keeping warm in winter or enjoying it as something you have when you dine out in an expensive or a moderately priced restaurant.
A lot of health conscious youngsters are turning to soups and parents are encouraging kids to do the same. I still think it is still a recent trend in India and I loved reading the informative comments to this post.

I also enjoyed all of your guest posts!! All of your soups look terrific. I especially like the chicken and potato. I would have to say that when I was younger I didn't really like to eat any kind of meat and would try my hardest to feed it to the dog instead.

Hi Erica, all your soups looks fantastic, I sure know where to come when looking for soups recipes. I used to hate garlic and onions and give my mother hard time when I was a kid. Now can't live without it. 🙂
