This dulce de leche hot chocolate is a very decadent version of hot cocoa. It’s thick, sweet and chocolatey.

In Colombia we drink hot chocolate for breakfast or late afternoon snacks all year round. Since moving to the Northeastern United States many years ago, there’s nothing like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold, winter day, especially if it's made with sweet and creamy dulce de leche!

What is Dulce de Leche?
It's a creamy and sweet caramel made with milk and sugar. In Colombia is also known as arequipe and in other Latin countries as cajeta. You can find it online or at your local market. It is also very easy to make at home with this recipe.
I am crazy for all things dulce de leche or arequipe flavored and it seemed only logical to pair it with a cup of hot chocolate.

Ingredients You'll Need
The printable recipe card with exact amounts and cooking directions is below.
Chocolate: I like to use a mix of bitter sweet and milk chocolate to make this drink.
Dulce de Leche: You can find it online or at your local market. I have a recipe on the blog for homemade dulce de leche if you want to try it.
Milk: I prefer using whole milk for a rich hot chocolate, but feel free to use your favorite.
Vanilla: It gives extra delicious flavor.
Cinnamon: For extra warm flavor and aroma.

How to Make Dulce de Leche Hot Chocolate
- Warm 2 cups of milk with the chocolate and dulce de leche, stirring until the chocolate is melted. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.
- Vigorously whisk in the remaining two cups of milk. Make sure to warm the cocoa completely through. Turn off the heat and add the vanilla and cinnamon. Top with extra dulce de leche.
Cook Notes
To serve it top with more dulce de leche and a dollop of whipped cream you want.
