Carne Afanada is the Colombian version of meatloaf and the perfect dish for any weeknight meal.

    Receta de Carne AfanadaPin

I receive many emails from readers asking me when I will be posting various Colombian recipes. Lately, Carne Afanada is one of the most requested recipes and it is the Colombian version of meatloaf. This dish is comforting and full of flavor.

    Colombian MeatLoafPin

After asking some friends and family about this carne afanada recipe, I learned that this dish is popular in the El Valle department of Colombia. It is traditionally made with ground beef and cooked on top of the stove, but I put my own twist on the dish and added some ground pork and I started cooking the meatloaf on the stove but finished cooking it in the oven. It is a delicious Colombian dish.

Ingredients You"ll Need to Make this Recipe

The hogao or Colombian style creole sauce made with onions and tomato. It gives this meatloaf a wonderful flavor.

Meat: I like to use a mixture of ground beef and pork for my recipe, but feel free to use just beef if you prefer.

Eggs: They will help to bind the meatloaf.

    Flour: Use all purpose flour

    Spices: Cumin, salt and pepper.

Bread Crumbs: You can use your favorite brand.

    How to Make Carne Afanada

    • To make the meatloaf: In a large bowl mix the ground beef, ground pork, hogao, bread crumbs, flour, whisked eggs, salt, ground cumin and pepper. Mix well until combined.
    • Form a meatloaf and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
    • Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large ovenproof saucepan and add the sauce ingredients. Cook for about 10 minutes over medium heat. Add the meatloaf to the sauce and cook for 5 minutes on each side.
    • Adjust the oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 350°F.
    • Transfer the sauce pan with the meatloaf to the oven and cook for about 45 minutes.
    • Serve warm with white rice or vegetables on the side.

Tips to Make and Serve this Recipe

Don't overmix the meat mixture, because the meatloaf will be tough.

Let the meatloaf rest after cooking for about 10 minutes, before slicing.

Leftover meatloaf can be refrigerated in an airtight container wrap for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave until heated through.

This dish can be eaten with your choice of favorite side dishes. Some of my favorite are rice, mashed potatoes and fried plantain.

I have a really hard time with meatloaf...its almost too much meat for me but I think with the 2 different kinds of meat, the cumin and your hogao....this could be the one

Very interesting that it would be cooked on the stovetop. I like how you combined both the stovetop and oven method in this recipe. I love meatloaf Erica and this looks great!

Marta- Algunas personas Colombianas me la pidieron, pero yo tampoco sabia de carna afanada y una amiga me dijo que era un plato del Valle y me dio la receta. Solo haces el rollo y lo dejas en la nevera por media hora y no se desbarata.
